Former Vice President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin met on Monday over the phone.
Biden spoke with Putin as the unrest in Ukraine continued to escalate, according to a statement from Biden’s office. The two spoke about the conflict in the country between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian government forces, and assured that both the United States and Russia would take steps to reduce the tension.

“While the fighting in eastern Ukraine continues, the leaders expressed their hope that Russia and Ukraine can implement the Minsk Agreements of 2015, which have not been fully implemented,” the statement said. “They reaffirmed their commitment to prevent any further escalation of violence and recognized the sacrifices and courage of Ukrainian forces on the battlefield.”
Biden is currently in Israel as part of a Middle East tour. He is scheduled to visit Iran on Tuesday, and will appear at a town hall meeting and will hold several bilateral meetings, according to the Biden team.
