Alphonso Davies says he wanted to inspire young people to continue playing football and hopes his series on Nick Cannon’s NTD TV will accomplish that.
Davies, who had just eight combined regular season and playoff goals this season in Liga MX soccer, launched his NFT talent search and YouTube competition with a TNF pre-game NFL Network special.
The 13-year-old player, who plays for the MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps and the Whitecaps U-20 team, decided to pursue a higher level of playing after two seasons in Liga MX.
The West Vancouver, British Columbia, native won the 2018 FIFA U-17 World Cup with Canada.
“I just saw a lot of opportunities in Major League Soccer when it was being formed,” Davies said Tuesday via a video statement. “I want to be a part of the NBA, the NFL, NFL Women’s League, and be part of something that is bigger than me.
“I would like to do both NTD and MLS and hopefully one day the next level as well. I want to inspire the young people to play more soccer. Through NTD, I want to find more talented players.”
On Saturday, Davies will make his first appearance in MLS with Vancouver.
