A man has died after being shot in the Lower East Side early this morning, police said. At 4:20 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call of shots fired in the vicinity of Broadway and Essex Street and found the victim, 26, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The man was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
He is the second man to die from a shooting this week, along with 30-year-old James Pugel, a gay actor and activist who was fatally shot Monday in Greenwich Village.
Residents in Scarborough expressed deep grief.
“It’s not unusual for us,” a resident said. “Shootings are always happening. Anywhere in the city that is predominantly black and Latin—but I guess in our section there is more.”
Another woman added, “It’s very sad. This is our community and it needs to be policed better.”
