Actor Alec Baldwin has expressed his concern for the safety of low-budget film shoots after a production car hit him in New York City.
The 67-year-old actor, who plays President Donald Trump on the TV comedy “Saturday Night Live,” was walking his pet dog on his Upper West Side street early Saturday when the crash occurred.
An onlooker said the actor was walking along the sidewalk when the car struck him, CNN affiliate WCBS reported.
On Saturday evening, Baldwin took to Instagram to share a photo of a bloodied collarbone and a photo from the scene.
“I couldn’t feel my jaw and my jaw was hurting. I wasn’t bleeding, but I had a black eye. Someone told me I was supposed to be in New York City opening a wine bar tomorrow with friends… But we’re doing it Friday,” he said in the caption.
“Honestly, if I had some money to burn, I’d do everything I could to make that stay closed,” he said.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said the man driving the car, who has been identified as Alec Ciccolella, was treated at Bellevue Hospital. A relative said the 59-year-old Ciccolella is married to the mother of Baldwin’s 11-year-old daughter Ireland.
A messenger service representative told CNN that the actor’s assistant was on the phone with the messenger when the crash occurred.
Baldwin told his Instagram followers that he was “only doing what working actors are supposed to do, which is go out when it’s a slow street.”
“I wasn’t under the influence, didn’t have my cell phone on me and wasn’t talking to anyone when the accident happened,” he said.
Baldwin said he initially drove to the hospital to check on his dog but then decided to stay at the site for the rest of the evening. He said the “next few days will be a little touch and go.”
His “Saturday Night Live” co-star Bobby Moynihan tweeted about the accident, asking, “Are we really supposed to think Alec Baldwin was under the influence?”
“Rust,” which stars Baldwin as someone who is released from prison, is in post-production.
“I want to stress that no one on set was injured as a result of this situation,” Suroosh Alvi, the film’s executive producer, said in a statement to CNN. “Mr. Baldwin was on the property of CBS Television Studios, which is separate and adjacent to the location of the accident, where he was filming a cameo.”
Robert Klein, who plays Baldwin’s parole officer in the film, posted a photo of himself and the actor on Instagram, saying Baldwin “was hit by a car and is checked out.”
“He is doing OK. I was joking with him and he said, ‘Bob, no one is throwing obstacles at me,'” Klein said in the post.
“Rust” was shooting at the location before the crash, according to an account on the film’s website.
